Instagram is No Longer Going to be a Photo Sharing App? | Social Media Marketing Updates

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram (IG) recently announced that the platform will no longer be a photo sharing app. The reason for this he explained is "Instagram doesn't see itself as a platform where people go to share photos anymore." The platform over the few months is most likely going to become like Tiktok and Youtube in terms of being Video Future Apps.

Video Content has become more popular across all Social Media Platforms, especially short video format content, as see with Youtube Short Videos and Tiktok. The shift in IG's outlook has also not only be influenced by what content format people like but also by competition. Therefore, in order to remain competitive Instagram has decided to innovate with changing times.

According to Mosseri, Instgram's priorities and tools they will be implementing over the next few months are as follows;

  •  The Native Affiliate Tool which will allow Creators to discover new products available on checkout and to share them with their followers. Creators will be able to earn commissions from products within the IG App. A tagged Affiliate Product will include the label “eligible for commission,” at the top of each post, so that it is clear to audiences/followers that their purchases help support a Content Creator.
  • News Article called Instagram Insider - Creator Issue  has been released with a sole focus on IG Creators. The issues will include tips such as how to creators can monetize on their content. IG will also do a Weekly Reels Star Search Program (IG Live Episodes) from Emerging Creators talking about what's working well for them on the platform amongst other topics.
  •  Shopping – the has pandemic has drastically changed the way we shop online and IG is not one to wait around. They have been implementing more tools to enable people to show within the IG App. Creators or Business Account Owner can now link their Facebook Shops to Facebook and IG Posts/Content within their Newsfeed and Stories.
  • Messaging – how we connect with others on IG will improve. So far the Creators are able to earn badges through their Live Sessions. More news to follow on how IG will changing the outlook of messaging.
