𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚? - Free Online Tech Community For Women | Professional Women and Female Entrepreneurs in Tech

Elpha is a free online community where women build their careers in tech. It is a  community also intended to help women with their personal and professional development.  I was pleased to have come across an Online Tech Community for Women, as part of my life vision to contribute to encouraging more women to embrace and contribute more in the Digital and Tech Industry.

Reason being? It is beneficial for women to at the forefront of digital and tech innovation, especially when it comes to products and services which are created for women. The other advantage of being part of the Tech Industry especially now, is that there is also still a global skills gender gap in the Tech Industry.

According to Target Jobs you can qualify to work in the industry without an Information Technology (IT) Degree and earn a higher income. There are also less women in the industry right now, making it less competitive and advantage to seek opportunities now.

Examples statics consisting of the percentage of women employed in the tech industry;

  • In 2020, only 25%  of GAFAM's (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft) employees were female.
  • Only 37% of Tech Startups have at least one woman on the board of directors.
  • The ration of men to women in engineering is 5:1.
  • 25.5% of Google's leaders on a global scale are women

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING PART OF A ELPHA TECH COMMUNITY?

1. Peer Support and network with like-minded women
2. Access to Mentors and Specialist in the field
3. Job opportunities (find or offer jobs)
4. Join Communities or Create your own
5. Project collaboration opportunities
6. Contribute to providing advise
7. Introduce your new innovative project/business idea and receive feedback.
7. Opportunities for newbies in the industry to learn more about the industry.

WHY ARE WOMEN LESS INTERESTED IN THE TECH INDUSTRY AS A CAREER PATH?
According to Entrepreneur Magazine's here are the three main reasons why, "women tend not to consider tech as a career path:

  • The passion for tech isn’t instilled in girls early on.
  • Girls aren’t aware of the opportunities available in the field.
  • They don’t possess the same confidence as boys when it comes to tech.
FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS:
Taking into considered the current global pandemic crisis and more people being forced to work from home, or to consider alternative career paths.
  •  Will more women be encouraged to consider personal and professional development in the Digital and Tech Industry?
  • Could the establishment of more Tech Communities like Elpha and earlier education investment encourage more younger girls and women to consider tech as part of the education and career path? Also help more girls and women to overcome their  self-limiting beliefs and to gain more confidence?
  • Could another career path for women also be to develop our women led tech startups rather than struggling with climbing up the career ladder in GAFAM's type organization which are majorly led by men? Learn more about the 50 Women-Led Startups That are Crushing Tech via Forbes Magazine Here.

Could the current pandemic encourage more women to embrace the Tech Industry due to more opportunities of being able to work from home?  The following data from TechJury  demonstrates otherwise at the moment, as women still account for a lower percentage than men, in being qualified and employed in the Tech Industry;

  • 56% of women quit their technology jobs in 2016.
  • In 2018, the number of women who left their STEM jobs was 53%. In comparison, that number for men is 31%.
