WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO "BOSS IT UP," FOR YOUR VIDEO INTERVIEWS | SELF-EMPLOYMENT & INDEPENDENT CONTRACTING

This topic is related to those individuals who are interested in becoming their own Bosses/C.E.O.s of their own Companies, or independent Entrepreneurship ventures. For the past month, I have been assisting virtually with recruiting Self-Employed and Independent Contractors (in a voluntary capacity) for a Small Family Business. All the sessions have been booked via Zoom Video Call

You cannot afford to boss it up in 2020 onwards, as opportunities will become much harder and more challenging to obtain due to more losing their jobs. Those same people are also most likely to start seeking Self-Employed and Independent Contracting opportunities, not only due to losing their jobs, but also due to the fact that more people do not want to put themselves at risk healthwise by working in traditional office environments.

Lessons Learnt and Challenges:

Some of the new recruits/potential business partners have informed me that they are interested in eventually establishing their own independent businesses. Based on my observations and experience so far, here are some of the challenges I've been confronted by;

  • Some individuals have not showed up for interviews, even though they booked the appointment themselves. They have not sent advance apologies for not being able to attend their own interview appointment, or to request if their interview could be rescheduled.
  • They have turned up late, over 15 minutes (which is the cut off waiting time for me). Or forgotten they had an appointment and contacted me days later to request if their appointment could be rescheduled.
  • Once recruited, some individuals have not shown up on time, or cancelled last minute. Through their actions they have contracted what they initially stated during their interview process about their core values.
  • Acted unprofessionally during interviews, via texts and emails and personal presentations As in forgot to demonstrate professional verbal and written communication etiquette. Also did not make much effort with dress attire and did not choose an appropriate environment to show up in for their online interview.

Other past experiences of recruitment and challenges;
  1. Individuals not being proactive in completing or providing the necessary recruitment documentation on time.
  2. Cancelling their client appointments last minute, which they had committed to, without providing a reason.
"The above actions for me so far haven't demonstrated potential C.E.O. and Founder of a Company qualities. There are not qualities of someone, I would be interested in going into partnership with."

Apply for each Self-Employed Job like a C.E.O or potential Business Partners, as you never know what it could become your next opportunity.

  • An opportunity where that person who is hiring you, may choose to offer to Mentor/Coach you for free.
  • They might choose you to become the next Manager, Director or C.E.O. where you gain new skills for free.
  • They could eventually offer you a partnership based on your performance.
  • Also remember to communicate verbally and in written format in a professional manner, regardless of what job it is, until you are familiar with the company culture.
Actions speak louder than words

When applying for a new opportunity remember regardless of what position it is, remember the interviewer is observing

  • how you show up as a person and what your core values align in person or virtually
  • whether your words match your actions and presentation format
  • how you communicate professionally, through your words and written communication (texts, emails, calls).
  • the effort you made through your dress attire
  • the location/environment you selected to show up in for your virtual interview meeting.

Also take into consideration that you have to work much harder as a Self-Employed person than an Employee would do demonstrate your pre-existing skills and qualities. You are being hired on the basis that you are already skilled, qualified and ready to deliver the services an Independent Contractor. It is also much easier for you to be replaced by someone else than it would be for an permanent employment opportunity.

You also have to invest in your own person and professional development which will enable you to switch from an employee mindset to an entrepreneur mindset.

You have always show up as your best version and continue to do so, especially if you want to become your own C.E.O and Boss.
